A Hope Under The Bridge

“The world has changed – but our determination to provide every woman and man with the skills, capacities and opportunities to become everything they wish, in dignity and respect, remains as firm as ever. Literacy is a foundation to build a more sustainable future for all” - Irina Bokova (UNESCO Director-General)

On the occasion of the World Literacy day, we thought of sharing with you a UNIQUE tale of dedication, sacrifice, and effort. Yes, this story is about a man who runs a slum school underneath a metro bridge in the east Delhi’s Shakarpur area. Many years ago, he dreamt of becoming an engineer, but circumstances, let him down, and he couldn’t complete his studies. That unfulfilled dream has turned into this school. In 2007 he started this special venture with a few students at his side now the number rose to 200 – the kids from the nearby slums attend this special school that functions from 9 am to 2 pm in two batches. The children here are taught to read, write, as well as learn the basics of English, Hindi, science, mathematics, history, and geography. However, the school does not follow any fixed syllabus as they do not have any government approval, but it achieves the purpose of a school by imparting knowledge to every child who comes here.

The train passes as the children study in rapt attention – here they also learn how to overcome the difficulties, and challenges which they face every day in their respective lives. The most of the kids who study here are from the nearby slums, and their parents did not have enough money to provide them good education. We just want to proclaim through this blog-post that everyone in this world has right to gain knowledge, so please support this courageous cause as someone has rightly said “we rise from lifting others."
